The year was 2006.

The stage?

Suzuka, Japan.

A narrow, high-speed Formula 1 circuit where one mistake ends your race instantly.

The scene?

Fernando Alonso vs. Michael Schumacher— the young wolf hunting the king.

On lap 53, Alonso makes a move that’s still talked about twenty years later.

He goes around the outside of Schumacher through a full-throttle corner at nearly 200 mph. Fully exposed, with catastrophic consequences if anything goes wrong.

Spoiler: he completes the overtake.

After the race, a reporter asks about the moment.

Alonso drops one of the most famous lines in F1 history:

“I knew he would hit the brakes… he has a wife and two kids at home.”

The quote reveals Alonso’s willingness to take a risk that Schumacher wouldn’t, even though he was fully aware of the stakes.

And I can’t help but see a parallel in the call of living for Christ.

Not recklessness. Not throwing your life away.

But living a life that is anything but casual.

Following Christ may not always cost you your life in the physical sense (though millions have been martyred for their faith).

But Jesus put it plainly:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

I pray to live with that level of conviction— unashamed to put God first in all things, at all times, regardless of the cost.
